It wasn’t unusual for Kathryn to come calling in the wee hours, but she’d been up late these nights with the Doctor’s existential crisis. She looked worn out, Chakotay thought now, cataloguing her shadowed eyes and drooping stance.
“I couldn’t sleep.”
He ushered her inside his quarters. “Tell me.”
“I’ve been thinking about choices,” she said eventually. “Specifically, one I didn’t make, a very long time ago.”
“Tau Ceti Prime.” He’d read her file. “You’ve second-guessed yourself enough. You know it leads nowhere good.”
“The Doctor is proof of that,” she acknowledged. “Thanks, Chakotay. I think I can sleep now.”
